Roman Laritate Russo is one of the main characters and the deuteragonist of the Disney Channel Original Series Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. He is the eldest child of Justin and Giada Russo, and the older brother of Milo Russo. Roman is also the cousin of Billie Russo, and the eldest grandchild of Jerry and Theresa Russo. He is portrayed by Alkaio Thiele.

Background[]

At the beginning of the series, Roman is unaware of the Wizard World or his father's past as a wizard. When he first meets Billie, he refuses to believe that magic exists.

Personality[]

According to Alkaio Thiele in an interview, Roman Russo is "a very rule-follower, very good student, and straight-A's, and he just wants to be exactly like his dad no matter what it takes."[2] Roman is intelligent and often nerdy with a goofy sense of humor. Due to being logic-minded, Roman didn't believe in anything supernatural or paranormal until he met Billie and found out about his father's past as a Wizard and his family Wizard heritage. Despite being likeminded with his father, Roman has a need for attention and showing off when it comes to athletic feats and would use magic to make himself better than others even if it means cheating and tends to use magic for shortcuts, more than his father ever does, as his dad rarely ever uses magic for shortcuts.

Roman is of Italian and Mexican-American descent on his father Justin Russo’s side. He has dark brown hair, hazel eyes, and a lean build that grows noticeably taller between seasons.

History[]

Early Life[]

Roman Russo was born in the summer of 2013 in Staten Island, New York, to Giada Russo and Justin Russo. He grew up unaware of his magical lineage until his cousin Billie accidentally revealed the family’s wizarding history. In the episode Nigh is Now!, Roman gains his full wizard powers after being struck by Silas Evilini’s Power Vacuum. He then picks up his father’s wand to battle Silas.

Since Roman got his wizard powers in Nigh is Now!, the two have been completing to become the better wizard and are expected to compete against each other in the next Russo Family Wizard Competition, set to take place in 2030. In the episode Curse Me Baby One More Time, it’s revealed that Roman thinks of Billie as his sister. In the episode Don't Go Changeling My Heart, Billie calls Roman her brother.

  • Roman has the same initials as his paternal great-grandmother Rose Russo.
  • Roman has always shared a bedroom with his younger brother Milo Russo where they share a bunk bed. He sleeps on the bottom bunk.
  • Roman is very similar to his father Justin Russo and his parental grandfather Jerry Russo respectively in many ways. Justin, Jerry, and Roman are the oldest son, have a younger brother, and are very smart.
  • Although Roman and Billie are total opposites, the two share some similarities, as both he and his maternal cousin and honorary younger sister Billie Russo have used magic for shortcuts.
